ADC Pathway — Stage 1

ADC Initial Assessment 2026 — Eligibility, Documents, Fees & Timeline

The initial assessment is the first gate in the ADC pathway. It determines whether your dental qualifications are eligible for the Australian Dental Council examination process. Without it, you cannot apply for the Written Exam. Here is everything you need to know before you apply.

What the initial assessment checks

The ADC initial assessment is not an exam — it is a document-based verification of your professional qualifications. The Australian Dental Council reviews your dental degree, professional registration status, and supporting documents to confirm you are eligible to enter the examination pathway.

If your assessment is successful, you receive eligibility to apply for the ADC Written Examination. If unsuccessful, you are ineligible to proceed and must explore alternative pathways (such as completing an Australian dental qualification).

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the ADC initial assessment, you must meet all of the following criteria:

Dental degree: You must hold a minimum 4-year, full-time university dental degree or diploma from a recognised institution. The degree must qualify you for registration as a dentist in the country where it was awarded. Part-time degrees may be considered if they are equivalent in content and duration.

Professional registration: You must have held full and unrestricted professional registration or licence as a dentist in your country of qualification or in the country where you have practised. Your registration must not have been suspended, cancelled, or subject to conditions due to conduct or performance issues.

Internship or clinical experience: If your dental degree required a mandatory internship or clinical training period to be eligible for registration, you must provide evidence of completing it.

For Indian dentists (BDS): Indian BDS degrees are generally recognised as meeting the 4-year requirement. You must provide your BDS degree certificate, your dental council registration (state or national), and a letter of good standing from the Dental Council of India. See our complete guide for Indian dentists.

Documents required

All documents must be submitted through ADC Connect. Passport photographs must be uploaded as .jpg or .png files. All other documents must be clear and submitted in .pdf, .jpeg, .jpg, or .png format.

Identity documents: Current passport (bio page), passport-style photograph meeting ADC specifications.

Qualification documents: Dental degree certificate or diploma, academic transcript showing subjects and grades, evidence of internship completion (if required by your institution).

Registration documents: Certificate of registration or licence as a dentist, letter of good standing from your dental registration authority. The letter of good standing must be sent directly to ADC from the issuing authority and is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

From July 2025: The ADC no longer requires evidence of current registration and good standing at the initial assessment stage for candidates on the "registration only" pathway. This evidence is now required later when applying for AHPRA registration. However, candidates seeking a skills assessment still need to provide it after passing exams.

Common rejection reasons: The most frequent causes of unsuccessful or delayed initial assessments are: incomplete document uploads, letters of good standing that are expired (older than 3 months), degree certificates not clearly showing the duration of study, and missing internship evidence. Submit everything correctly the first time — an incomplete application can delay your assessment by months.

How to apply — step by step

Step 1: Create an account on ADC Connect (the ADC's online portal).

Step 2: Start a new initial assessment application. Confirm your registration type (general dentistry) and application type.

Step 3: Upload all required documents. Ensure every document is clear, correctly formatted, and complete.

Step 4: Arrange for your letter of good standing to be sent directly to ADC from your dental registration authority.

Step 5: Pay the AUD $647 assessment fee. Payment is non-refundable.

Step 6: Submit your application and wait for the assessment outcome (~8 weeks).

The ADC will notify you of one of three outcomes: successful (eligible to apply for the Written Exam), incomplete (additional information required), or unsuccessful (ineligible).

After your initial assessment is approved

Once approved, you can apply for the ADC Written Examination during the next available application window. Check the 2026 exam dates to plan your timeline. Your initial assessment is valid for 7 years, so you have a substantial window to complete the entire ADC pathway.

Do not wait for your initial assessment result before starting to study. The assessment takes ~8 weeks, and the Written Exam requires months of preparation. Start studying Therapeutic Guidelines and practising with clinical vignettes immediately after submitting your application.
