If a corticosteroid/antibiotic paste is chosen instead, when should it be placed and for how long?
Dental trauma questions test protocol-level decisions — splint type, duration, follow-up timing — where one wrong detail means a wrong answer. This exam-level vignette tests your ability to work through clinical details and arrive at the correct management.
A 15-year-old's closed-apex replanted incisor is undergoing root canal treatment 12 days after replantation. The dentist debates which intracanal medicament to use and for how long. If a corticosteroid/antibiotic paste is chosen instead, when should it be placed and for how long?
- A. Immediately or shortly after replantation, left in situ for at least 6 weeks minimum
- B. At the 2-week RCT appointment only, left for 1 month before root canal filling procedure
- C. Only after signs of inflammatory resorption appear on radiographic examination at follow-up
- D. Applied weekly for 4 consecutive weeks, with fresh paste placed at each weekly appointment

IADT: 'If a corticosteroid or corticosteroid/antibiotic mixture is chosen, it should be placed immediately or shortly after replantation and left in situ for at least 6 weeks.' This contrasts with Ca(OH)2 which is placed at the 2-week RCT and stays up to 1 month. SOURCE — Fouad AF et al. IADT Avulsion Guidelines, Dent Traumatol 2020;36:331-342, Section 10
