Paediatric dentistry questions combine clinical management with age-appropriate considerations — LA dosing by weight, behaviour management. This exam-level vignette tests your ability to work through clinical details and arrive at the correct management.
A patient lodges a formal complaint with the Dental Board alleging that a crown the dentist placed six months ago was poorly fitting and has caused ongoing pain. The patient is scheduled for a follow-up appointment next week for an unrelated issue — a routine examination. The dentist is upset by the complaint and believes it is unjustified. The dentist is considering whether to continue seeing the patient. According to the Code, the dentist MUST ensure that:
- A. The patient is transferred to another practitioner immediately, as continuing to treat a patient who has complained creates an unacceptable conflict of interest
- B. The complaint does not adversely affect the patient's care — the dentist may continue treating the patient provided care quality is maintained, or refer if they cannot maintain objectivity
- C. All future interactions with the patient are documented in greater detail than usual and countersigned by another practitioner, as a protective measure during the investigation
- D. Communication with the patient is limited to clinical matters only, with no discussion of the complaint, the crown, or any topic that could be relevant to the investigation

Section 3.11d requires that the complaint does not adversely affect the person's care. This is the core obligation — it does not mandate transfer, but it does require the practitioner to honestly assess whether they can maintain care quality. If not, referral is appropriate. Option A mandates transfer in all cases — the Code does not require this; it requires maintained care quality, which may or may not require transfer. Option C describes protective documentation practices that are sensible but not the Code's primary requirement — the obligation is about care quality, not documentation. Option D restricts communication in ways that could itself adversely affect care — open communication is part of good care.
